At Whitehill Secondary School, we are committed to fostering a learning environment where all young people feel safe, respected, and valued for who they are. We believe that LGBT+ inclusion is central to creating a supportive and empowering school community, and we are incredibly proud to be a LGBT Charter Bronze School.
Our staff are dedicated to championing inclusivity and challenging discrimination, ensuring that all young people—regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression—have the opportunity to thrive. Through inclusive education, training, and ongoing engagement with students, staff, and the wider community, we continue to build a school where LGBT+ young people feel truly supported.
🏳️🌈 LGBT Charter Bronze Award – Our school has been recognised by LGBT Youth Scotland for our ongoing commitment to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment.
🎓 Staff Training & Development – All staff at Whitehill Secondary have received Stage 1 training in LGBT-inclusive education through the Time for Inclusive Education (TIE) campaign, with almost all staff trained to Stage 2 . This means that our educators are equipped with the knowledge and skills to embed LGBT+ inclusion across the curriculum, challenge homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia, and support LGBT+ students effectively.
📚 Embedding LGBT+ Themes in Learning – We integrate LGBT+ topics across various subjects to ensure visibility and representation in the curriculum. This includes LGBT+ history, literature, and contributions to society, as well as ensuring inclusive language and perspectives in all areas of learning.
🤝 LGBT+ Student Voice & Support Groups – We provide safe spaces where young people can share their experiences, build connections, and influence school policies through our LGBT+ Pupil Group.
🏫 Inclusive School Policies – Our policies reflect our commitment to inclusion, with clear anti-bullying procedures, gender-neutral facilities, and guidance on supporting trans and non-binary students.
🌍 Whole-School Approach – Inclusion is embedded beyond the classroom, through school assemblies, awareness campaigns, and participation in national LGBT+ events, such as Pride Month, Purple Friday, and Trans Day of Visibility.
The Time for Inclusive Education (TIE) campaign is Scotland’s leading organisation working to deliver LGBT-inclusive education in schools. TIE has been instrumental in ensuring that Scotland became the first country in the world to embed LGBT+ topics into the national curriculum.
TIE’s training equips educators to:
✅ Understand the experiences and challenges faced by LGBT+ young people.
✅ Embed LGBT+ identities, histories, and themes across all subjects.
✅ Challenge and tackle LGBT-phobic bullying in schools.
✅ Create a more inclusive and affirming school culture for all students.
