The Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) is the national body responsible for developing, accrediting, assessing, and certifying qualifications in Scotland. Their work ensures that learners gain recognition for their educational achievements, supporting progression into further education, training, or employment.

The SQA offers a range of qualifications that your child may undertake during their secondary education:
National 4 and National 5 – Typically pursued in S3 and S4, these courses cover a broad spectrum of subjects. National 5 courses include coursework and a final exam, while National 4 courses are internally assessed without an exam.
Higher – Usually studied in S5, Highers are crucial for university entry in Scotland. Assessment includes coursework and final examinations.
Advanced Higher – Offered in S6, these courses provide in-depth study in specific subjects and are ideal for students aiming for advanced university placement or specialised Assessment and Support
The SQA uses a variety of assessment methods to evaluate students' knowledge and skills, including:
Coursework – Assignments, projects, or practical activities completed during the course.
Examinations – Formal assessments conducted at the end of the course.
Continuous Assessment – Ongoing evaluations throughout the academic year.
To help students succeed, the SQA provides a range of support resources:
Past Papers and Marking Instructions – Great for exam practice.
Understanding Standards – Provides examples of assessed work to clarify grading expectations.
Specimen Question Papers – Sample papers that illustrate the type and style of exam questions.
Once students complete their courses, they receive a Scottish Qualifications Certificate (SQC) detailing their achievements. Results are typically released in August, and students can access them online, via text message, or by mail.
If there are any concerns about grades, students may have the option to appeal through the SQA Appeals Service, which allows them to request a review of their assessment.
SQA Parents and Carers Page – Offers guidance on supporting your child through their qualifications.
National Parent Forum of Scotland – Provides "Nutshell" guides summarizing different qualifications and exam processes.
Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) – Explains the level and credit value of different qualifications.
SQA Candidate Advice – Helps students understand how exams work and how to prepare.
By understanding how the SQA operates and the resources available, parents and carers can better support their child’s learning journey and help them achieve their best possible outcomes.
